The wreckage of the tanker "AMOCO CADIZ" on the reefs of PORTSALL was the fourth oil spill in ten years on the coast of Brittany : it also is the largest known oil spill in the world. The patches at sea were driven eastward by westerly winds from March 17 to March 23. 140 Km of coast line was polluted. The oil spreaded more slowly towards the north west, south and north west where it spoiled some 375 Km of touristic sea coast and important fishing grounds. The coastline is six kilometers wide ; it includes islands and large reefs. The local tidal currents are very strong and reach more than three knots, during spring tides which may rise up to nine meters in a rough sea conditions. 1. Abiotic and biotic variables of coastal lagoons are highly heterogeneous in both space and time, and this heterogeneity complicates the assessment of their ecological status. Foghorns to the Future: Using Knowledge and Transdisciplinarity to Navigate Complex Systems Ecology and Society

Complex systems are shaped by cross-scale interactions, nonlinear feedbacks, and uncertainty, among other factors. Transdisciplinary approaches that combine participatory and conventional methods and democratize knowledge to enable diverse inputs, including those from local, informal experts, are essential tools in understanding such systems. The metaphor of a “bridge” to overcome the divide between different disciplines and knowledge systems is often used to advocate for more inclusive approaches. Integration of Local Ecological Knowledge and Conventional Science: a Study of Seven Community-Based Forestry Organizations in the USA Ecology and Society

Natural resource management decisions can be based on incomplete knowledge when they lack scientific research, monitoring, and assessment and/or simultaneously fail to draw on local ecological knowledge. Many community-based forestry organizations in the United States attempt to address these knowledge gaps with an integrated ecological stewardship approach that balances ecological, social, and economic goals.
